WHAT IS STAGE PRESENCE?
PRESENCE IS PERSONAL MOMENT-TO-MOMENT INTEREST.
INTEREST CANNOT BE FAKED OR INDICATED. -ANNE BOGART
What does it mean to be present?
Cognitive neuroscience and psychology (understanding biological processes that make our minds possible and understanding behavioral and mental processes, respectively) both indirectly study presence through their examination of cognition and consciousness.
Presence shows up in both performance (we are with our audience, and the audience is with us) and visual art (our presence is found indirectly through observing our work). But what is it?
It is an unfiltered, unadulterated awareness, an acceptance of each moment as it arises and dissipates.
Like any skill, it can be learned.
